a question i’d never considered before: is there an ancient roman version of My Immortal? like, shittily written fanfiction self-insert shit you all know the story if not go look at it there

the answer i realized almost immediately after i asked the question: holy fuck yes there is. some of you might know him already but for those who don’t, the guy’s name is Silius Italicus

he was a silver age author that wrote an 12000 line long epic poem divided into 17 fucking books called Punica. Pliny said of him, “scribebat carmina maiore cura quam ingenio” (he wrote with more care than talent)

and it’s literally my immortal

1. The Punica is the longest Latin historical epic to come down to us, and usually considered the worst (if not the worst poem in all of Latin literature).
2. Silius has ludicrous divine intervention, like Hannibal being whisked away on a cloud. Scipio Africanus journeys to the underworld
3. The war against Hannibal is presented as a continuation of Vergil, derived from the curse of Dido against Aeneas’ descendants.
4. Silius Italicus generally just sucks.

So if you’re ever worried about your writing, rest assured you probably write loads better than Silius Italicus
